How the rate is set

The United States standard mileage rate is published annually by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is the safe-harbor figure most US employers use to reimburse business driving in personal vehicles tax-free under IRC §62(c) and Revenue Procedure 2019-46. The rate covers fuel, maintenance, depreciation, insurance, and registration in a single per-mile figure.
